What can be immediate, and what still needs checking?

A website may return an existing entry as soon as a search runs, but that does not establish when the underlying source was updated or whether all relevant jurisdictions were checked. Record the source date and coverage, then verify names and case identifiers before treating a fast hit as the intended person.

The FBI personal-history process is fingerprint based: an electronic application does not eliminate receipt and processing of fingerprints. Its FAQ describes processing after the completed fingerprint submission, not a guaranteed immediate report. Do not substitute that process for a required employment or licensing check.

If you need a result by a deadline, ask the responsible issuer what remains outstanding and whether the receiving organization accepts the product. A pending request, no match and unavailable document require different next steps. This page does not promise an instant service or a universal turnaround time.

FBI processing estimates checked October 2, 2026: an online request with electronic fingerprints at a participating U.S. Post Office is listed within 48 hours of that visit; an online request with a mailed fingerprint card is approximately 10 days after the FBI receives the card; a fully mailed request is up to 15 days. Allow additional time for mail delivery. The electronic application alone does not start fingerprint processing, and these published timings are not guaranteed arrival dates.

For federal court research, PACER says a specific court’s information is updated immediately, while the nationwide Case Locator index is updated daily. Thus a fast index response can have a different update schedule from the filing court’s own data. This is federal case information, not a complete personal criminal-history report.
